I will be the first to admit that Google’s latest Chromecast with Google TV had me completely bewildered when it was announced just over a month ago. The HD Chromecast came bearing a $29.99 price tag which wasn’t that much less than the sale prices frequently found on the 4K version of the Google TV dongle. I honestly believed that Google would release a new 4K Chromecast alongside the HD version with some sort of upgrade like, I don’t know, MORE STORAGE. I was wrong. Google is content with having just the two Chromecast models and I guess that’s okay. The 4K model obviously has its advantages for those that like their UHD content while the cheaper, HD model likely has more of a mass appeal to the average consumer. Now that the 4K model has finally received an upgrade to Android 12, which version you purchase really boils down to the type of content you consume. To 4K or not to 4K. That is the question. I can’t answer that question for you but I can share some good news that will save you some cash regardless of your choice. Both models of the Chromecast with Google TV are currently on sale and you can get your hands on one for as little as $20 from a variety of authorized Google retailers including the Google Store proper. $19.99 gets you the HD version of the Chromecast while the 4K model comes in at a respectable $39.99. That’s a pretty solid deal and, in my opinion, you won’t be disappointed with your purchase. Still, if you’re really looking to get the most bang for your buck, Walmart’s Onn 4K Android TV is retailing for $19.88 and it offers a nearly identical experience to Google’s streamer. Anyway, I just thought I’d share because this is the first deal I’ve seen on Google’s new HD Chromecast and it’s a decent discount on a handy streaming stick. Like other Android TV devices, these are great to throw in your bag when you travel. One, because you can actually use it with a captive internet portal on your hotel TV. Two, it’s cheap enough that it won’t be the end of the world if you leave one behind. Find both models of the Chromecast with Google TV at the retailers below.
