It’s been quite a long time since the first circular came out making it mandatory for everyone to link their PAN and Aadhaar Card together. Now if you’re wondering what happens if PAN card is not linked with Aadhaar, the answer is simple. According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), if you fail to link your PAN and Aadhaar card, your PAN card may become inoperative. This may stop you from conducting any financial transactions. Hence, it’s better to get your PAN-Aadhaar link done immediately.If you haven’t done your Aadhaar PAN link yet, don’t worry. CBDT has extended the deadline from March 31, 2022, to March 31, 2023. However, since you missed the earlier deadlines, you will now have to pay a fine or penalty. If you had linked your PAN and Aadhaar card by June 30, 2022, you would’ve only had to pay ₹500. But since that date is long gone, now you will be required to pay ₹1000 to link your PAN and Aadhaar card.Who Has To Get Their PAN-Aadhaar Link Done?According to the Income Tax website, “Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides that every person who has been allotted a permanent account number (PAN) as on the 1st day of July 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner. Hence, currently, the main two steps involved in linking your PAN and Aadhaar are:Completing payment of the applicable fee i.e. ₹1000 on NSDL(now Protean) portal under Major head (0021) and Minor head (500) for AY 2023-24.After 4-5 days of successfully paying the late payment fee, submit the PAN-Aadhaar link request on the e-Filing portal.Now, let’s get into the details of each of these steps. Here’s how you can pay your ₹1000 fine on the NSDL(now Protean) portal:Click on https://onlineservices.tin.egov-nsdl.com/etaxnew/tdsnontds.jsp and reach the Protean (previously NSDL) portal.Click on the proceed button below challan no./ITNS 280 under the NON-TDS/TCS section.Now, challan no./ITNS 280 will be displayed with a list of options for tax Applicable and type of payment.Choose 0021 (Income Tax other than companies) for the major head i.e. tax applicable and select 500 (Other Receipts) for the minor head i.e. type of payment.Now scroll down and select your preferred mode of payment.Enter your PAN, assessment year and other details as requested in the form and click on Proceed.Now make the payment of ₹1000 as any other amount won’t be accepted for PAN-Aadhar linking.That’s it, your penalty is paid and your first step towards linking your PAN and Aadhaar is complete.Also Read: Insurance Sector: The Latest In The Function Creep Of AadhaarMoving on to the second step, you’ll have to wait at least 4-5 days before you can put in a request to link your PAN and Aadhaar card. The service is available to individual taxpayers both registered and unregistered on e-Filing. Just follow the steps mentioned below to link your PAN with Aadhaar:Go to https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.Click on Link Aadhaar from the Quick Links menu.Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, and click on validate.Since you have completed the payment of challan on NSDL(now Protean) portal, your payment details are verified by e-filing and a message will pop up indicating the same. Click on continue.Fill in your PAN, Aadhar card and other details along with your phone number.Click on the Link Aadhaar button.You will now receive a 6-digit OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter that and click on validate.That’s it, your request for the PAN-Aadhaar link has been successfully submitted.
