Goalpara DC calls for non-health sector involvement to eradicate Tuberculosis

DC of Goalpara Khanindra Choudhury has called for the non-health sector involvement in order to eradicate the Tuberculosis menace from society.

A CORRESPONDENTGOALPARA: Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara Khanindra Choudhury has called for the non-health sector involvement in order to eradicate the Tuberculosis menace from society. "TB is not only a medical disease but a social problem as well. Such multi-faceted issues are beyond the efforts of health sector alone and a comprehensive solutions by meaningful involvement of non-health sectors is required', the DC said. Khanindra Choudhury was speaking on Saturday at his conference hall on the occasion of launching of the 'Nikshay Mitra' initiative under Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan which enables people to adopt tuberculosis patients and take care of their nutritional and medical requirements, aiming to combat the stigma associated with the disease. "We need to focus on motivating people, officers, corporate sectors, NGOs, CBOs and other stakeholders to adopt TB patients as a 'Nikshay Mitra' and engage community to make this a mass movement," he remarked. The objectives of 'Nikshay Mitra' is to provide additional patient support to improve treatment outcome of TB patients, augment community involvement in meeting India's commitment to end TB by 2025. The meeting was a special initiative on 'Community Support to TB Patients' from the state TB cell of National Tuberculosis Elimination Program, Assam under the guidance of National Health Mission Assam. As part of the programme, Eveready Industries, India has rolled out Nikhay Mitra initiatives in the selected Health Institution area of Goalpara District under which 421 tuberculosis patients are adopted and distributed nutritional supplement kits to the TB patients as per their nutritional requirement. There are 728 TB patients in the district. Earlier, in the introductory remarks of the event, Dr A. J. Kalita Inter Sectoral Engagament Expert, STSU, National TB Elimination Program, Assam said, "TB is one of the world's leading killer diseases, but it is 100% preventable and curable. Along with proper nutrition, convergence of diverse stakeholders with the National TB Elimination Program is important." "The figures of the TB scenario are very concerning, especially since this is a curable disease. District Health Department is taking initiative to engage private sector and community in Nikshay Mitra program under Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt bharat Abhiyan" said Dr J.
