The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell doubts that two of the three accused evading arrest in the GMC de-siltation scam might have fled the state.

STAFF REPORTERGUWAHATI: The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell doubts that two of the three accused evading arrest in the GMC de-siltation scam might have fled the state. The two are retired GMC Chief Engineer Tasdiqur Rahman and Executive Engineer Simanta Jyoti Baruah. Contractor Mithu Agarwal is also evading arrest. According to sources, the three accused evading arrests will come to the investigators' net. The investigators arrested chief account officer Abhimanyu Medhi from his Nalbari residence and brought him to Guwahati on October 22. He is under judicial custody now. According to sources, the investigators will grill more GMC officials. That may lead to more arrests. The eight arrested by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell on October 21 are GMC OSD Babulal Sarma, Executive Engineer and Swacchata Officer Ashif Ahmed, Executive Engineer (Division I) Shankar Medhi, Executive Engineer (Division-II) Ramakanta Saikia, Executive Engineer (Division-III) Alin Begum, Executive Engineer (Division-IV) Chittaranjan Dutta, Executive Engineer (Division-V) Hiranya Barman and M/s Dinsan Global Venture Pvt Ltd Director (contractor) Dinesh Jaiswal. With their five-day police custody ending today, the police will produce them before the Court of Special Judges here on October 26. The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell conducts search operations at the residences of the seven officials of the civic body and the office of the contractor from time to time. The investigators also collected samples of their handwriting. The accused GMC officials allegedly conspired with the contractors and refrained from implementing de-siltation works of drains etc., as per terms and conditions laid down in the tender documents. They allegedly released payments to the contractors without proper execution of works based on forged and fake weighbridge slips.
